Zygocacti (Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis) are beautiful flowering pot plants for either outside on the terrace or indoors. We sell the mini conifer Lawsoniana Ellwoodii in the autumn as a green tree or as a Mini X-Mas, when the conifer is decorated with snow or glitter as an extra.
Jan de Vries wanted to become a bicycle repairman, or carpenter, but training to become a carpenter required a weekly contribution of two Dutch guilders, to be paid to the employer. Working at a nursery he could earn two Dutch guilders a week. This difference of 4 Dutch guilders determined his future. At the age of twelve he started work as a nurseryman and at the age of fourteen he started growing outdoor flowers on a field of his own alongside his regular job, bringing them to the auction every morning before work. On August 19th 1942, Jan received his auction number and it was official.
He bought his first Zygocactus from an exporter in the 1950’s his nursery was then at 161 Zwarteweg in Aalsmeer. The sentence: “Jan if you want to become rich, then you have to grow this” was what prompted him to start cultivating Schlumbergera and Rhipsalidopsis. Jan’s only son Hans de Vries joined the company in 1966 and expanded it in 1975 by purchasing the nursery “De Populier” on Stommeerkade 64 in Aalsmeer. In the beginning of the 1980’s Hans realised his dream, a hypermodern automated nursery, at our current location. In September 2014, when Hans decided to retire, his son-in-law and daughter, Jelle Kleijn and Ilona Kleijn-de Vries, took over the running of the business as the third generation.
Flowering in the spring the Rhipsalidopsis is also known as Easter cactus, Spring cactus, Star cactus, Lidcactus, Zygocactus, Schlumbergera, Epiphyllum and in America as Sunrise cactus. The flowers are star-shaped and have a special characteristic as they close at sunset and open at sunrise. The plants are available in several colours: pink, purple, red, orange and white.
Indoors the Rhipsalidopsis needs a sunny spot, but not in direct sunlight. Once a week a little water and once a month a small amount of plant food is sufficient. In the summer the Rhipsalidopsis can easily be kept in the garden or on the balcony, but not in the full sun. At the end of the summer and before the frost, bring the plant indoors and place in a cool area with sufficient light for the winter.
To allow the plant to flower again, you need to water it sparingly (approximately 1x every 3 weeks) with a short day length of less than 10 hours. To shorten the plants access to daylight, you can trick the plant for example by placing a tea towel over it, or placing it in a dark area. It is also very important to keep the Rhipsalidopsis cold, around 12 degrees centigrade. When the plant starts to show buds, water a little more and move the plant to where it is warmer and lighter.
Schlumbergera flowers in the autumn and is known under the names Christmas Cactus, Lidcactus, Zygocactus and Epiphyllum. Some of these names refer to a completely different plant, or are popular local names. The natural habitat of the, Schlumbergera is Central and South America growing at altitudes between 900-1400 meters. It is an epiphyte meaning that it originally grows in trees. The modern hybrids are available in a wide range of colours including pink, purple, orange, red, yellow and white.

Originally the Chamaecyparis Ellwoodii is a hardy garden conifer. However you see this plant more and more in mixed plant arrangements and as a houseplant. Provided it is watered regularly it will thrive well in the living room.
Indoors the Ellwoodii needs a light, sunny spot. Water every other day and possibly a little fertilizer once a week. After the frost plant your Ellwoodii in the garden or replant it into a pot for on the patio or balcony. After a summer in your garden, it will easily survive the winter. In the garden the plant needs sufficient space, because over the coming years this mini tree will grow into a conifer with a diameter of approximately 2 meters in width and 4 meters in height.
As a miniature Christmas tree, the snow-covered Mini X-mas is a festive decoration for the living room. The snow is composed of starch and paper pulp and is therefore environmentally friendly. Further variations are available with glitter, various decorations and or decorative pots.
Indoors the Mini X-mas needs a light, sunny spot. Water every other day and possibly a little fertilizer once a week. With good care, the tree will continue to grow even though it is covered with the snow or glitter. After the holidays you can wash the snow or glitter off the plant with lukewarm water and speed up its growing process.
